Friday 28 September 2018

The project Remote Lab by Marco Winzker, Professor for Digital Technology and Digital Signal Processing at Hochschule Bonn-Rhein-Sieg has been recognized at the International Conference on Interactive Collaborative Learning (ICL) in Kos/Greece. The award in the category E-Learning was presented by the International E-Learning Association (IELA).

Every year, the IELA awards the best academic and commercial projects for technology-supported teaching. This year, the Remote Lab impressed the experts. The award-winning project consists of a laboratory test that can be operated via the Internet, the Remote Lab. In addition, teaching videos are provided enabling students to develop their own subject and content. The teaching concept is already supported by a fellowship for innovations in digital university teaching from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Stifterverband.

The teaching materials are used in the electrical engineering course at H-BRS and at the partner university Universidad Nacional de San Luis in Argentina. Moreover, the Remote Lab and the teaching videos are available as a free educational resource. Winzker explains: “With this Open Educational Resource, we promote the free exchange of knowledge and offer students all over the world the opportunity to use current teaching content.

World-wide access to the Remote-Lab

In October 2018, Prof. Marco Winzker presents the Remote-Lab at a conference in Cape Town and hopes for new users in African countries. But even now Winzker and project collaborator Andrea Schwandt are observing requests from all over the world. Winzker is the scientific director of the newly founded Centre for Innovation and Development in Teaching (ZIEL), where he conducts research on current developments in university teaching.
